A tiny desk friend with a big personality. Or a dozen.

Say “Hey Pebble” and ask it anything. It answers out loud, and its little face reacts while it talks. Put a different figure on top and you're talking to someone else entirely.

We're two makers building Pebble on a breadboard right now. The waitlist hears everything first.

Put a figure on it

Every figure has a small NFC tag hidden in its base. Pebble reads it, fetches that character's personality and voice from the cloud, and a second later it's someone new.

Four steps: a hand places a dragon figure on Pebble, Pebble reads its tag, loads its personality from the cloud, and starts talking with a dragon face on screen Concept render
  1. Place a figure on top.
  2. Read: Pebble spots the tag in its base.
  3. Load: the character's personality and voice arrive.
  4. Talk. Say “Hey Pebble” and say hello.

Meet the first few

Each one has its own way of talking, its own face on Pebble's screen, and its own job.

Five figures in a row: a mushroom chef, a dragon bard with a lute, a fox with glasses and a book, a small astronaut robot, and an unpainted grey figure Concept render
The mushroom chef
Talks you through recipes one step at a time, so you never touch your phone with floury hands.
The dragon bard
Runs your tabletop game night. Voices the villains, keeps the story moving, rolls the dice.
The bookish fox
Curious about everything. Ask it why the sky is blue and it'll ask you a question back.
The little astronaut
Pebble's everyday self: quick answers, reminders, and a friendly chat when you need one.
The grey one
Yours to print, paint, and give a personality. More on that below.
Six of Pebble's faces: idle, listening with sound waves, thinking with three dots, speaking, happy with closed eyes, and confused with a question mark Design sketch

It has a face, and it uses it

Pebble glances up while it thinks, squints when it laughs, and tilts a question mark at you when it didn't quite catch that. The eyes are drawn live, 25 times a second, so they never feel like a looping GIF.

Right now the prototype has orange eyes on a 1.77" screen. They blink. We're very proud of the blinking.

Small enough to hold

It's meant to live next to your keyboard, not take over your desk. No app to open, no screen to stare at. You talk, it talks back, and it plugs into a USB-C charger like your phone does.

Hands busy? Just ask

Pop the mushroom chef on and Pebble becomes a sous chef that reads you the next step when you say so, converts grams to cups, and doesn't mind being asked the same question three times.

Official figures, and your own

Official characters are locked: the dragon bard always sounds like the dragon bard, wherever you take it. Or print a blank figure, design a character in the app, and share it with everyone else.

Community characters arrive after launch. Every character, official or not, goes through the same safety checks.

What's inside (so far)

Pebble is a breadboard on our desk today. Here's what's on it:

  • Brain ESP32-S3 with Wi-Fi
  • Voice MAX98357A amp and a small speaker
  • Ears INMP441 microphones (one now, two soon)
  • Face 1.77" colour screen, moving to a sharper 1.69" IPS
  • Figures an NFC reader under the top pad (next on the list)
  • Body 3D printed on a Bambu Lab A1 mini

The thinking happens on our server, so Pebble itself never holds an AI password or key.

Round or square? Help us choose

We haven't settled on a shape. These are the ones we keep going back and forth on. Tell us your favourite when you join the waitlist.

Who's building this

We're Darren and Viky, and we're pretty new to electronics. We wanted something on our desks that felt more like a character than a speaker, so we started building one. Pebble has taught us about I2S audio, solder bridges, and how long a single wire one hole to the left can take to find.

We post the build as it happens, mistakes included.

Questions people ask us

When can I get one?

Not yet. Pebble is a working prototype, not a product. Join the waitlist and you'll hear about early units before anyone else.

How much will it cost?

We don't know yet. It depends on the final parts and how many we make. The waitlist will hear first.

Is it always listening?

It listens for one thing: “Hey Pebble”. Only after hearing that does it send what you say to its brain to work out an answer.

Does it need my phone or computer?

No. It joins your Wi-Fi and talks to its brain over the internet by itself.

Which languages does it speak?

English first. We'd love to add more after launch.

Can I really make my own figure?

That's the plan: print a blank figure, stick in a tag, and set up its personality in the app. Official figures stay locked to their own character.
